Well, it's Japanese, so it's NTSC, which means that it's probably telecined. And from what I've seen on Doom9 recently, there are some pretty decent "restore" functions that seem to do a good job with fixing blended frames like that due to a bad transfer, although I haven't personally used them.

I'd like to grab the raw MPEG-2 files, please. How big are they? I can provide a temporary account on my Linux box to upload them to, I've got several gigs of free space.

Question.

Is the reason the Americans are getting US music when both seem to be on the disc because of the regions their PS2s are set at? Anyone with a JAP PS2 able to test this theory out?

I didn't think of this, that may explain why I only sww two lines of question marks for the "hidden" games, instead of 5 (2 vectorman + 3 streets of rage)

while we're on the topic of sonic cd..

Ah, I supposed that. Wait until the GC version comes out, then someone provide Just Me with the game. I think she won't mind dumping them for us.

If the US GC version has the Japanese music on the disc, I'll just buy it and dump the roms myself. I haven't seen Just Me here in awhile...
(Yes, Japanese Sonic CD is worth $30 to me, but the US version isn't)

It comes out on Tuesday, so I'm hoping the ISO will be released around then, so I can download it, check for the file, then go buy it.

I found a hack for GCNrd (Gamecube RAM hacking program) that allows you to use back-up discs with it. Maybe we can use this to dump the ROMs from the RAM. As I don't have access to recordable mini-DVDs, I can't do it myself. This way we wouldn't have to buy the game to just dump the ROMs.

You can find the hack here: http://www.leetstudios.com/gxforum/viewtopic.php?t=164:

I'll be buying this game for sure, and then I can dump the ROMs. I was the one who did Sonic 1 v3 (I can't stop tooting my own horn :p) so if required of me, I can do this too.

HOWEVER, all past work aside, I LOVE you for finding this hack. I'll check out the link ASAP. By the way, the GCN's pirate/backup system is done over the BBA, not with discs.

Oh, so you are still here. :-P
Actually, it has been done with burned discs for at least 6 months now.

And the hack posted is for GCNrd 1.1, which is known to corrupt memory cards. (It corrupted my AR card twice now, so I dont even bother using it anymore) 1.1 saves the BBA settings onto a memory card instead of directly on the GC's flashrom. I believe someone did a hack for GCNrd 1.0, you might want to look for that instead, unless you've actually gotten GCNrd 1.1 to work without losing a memory card.

About Gems collection, which version of Toot Toot Sonic Warrior does it use? The original or the one where they re-recored the lady singer's vocals?

It corrupted my AR card too (had to enter the SDload code all over again) but it works just fine with official memory cards, so use an official memory card.

I'm still looking for some mini-DVDs, so I might be able to do it myself. But that's very unlikely...

OK, so if it -is- one version of the game that's just adapting to the fact you're all playing it on US PS2s... then someone stick it in a UK PS2 for the love of god =P

In fact, I would say that H.264 is already the best supported "next-gen" codec. Regular MPEG-4 is already well supported in the forms of DivX, XviD, ffmpeg and variants. There are wavelet-based codecs such as Snow and Dirac but they aren't as well supported, and at least in the case of Dirac, is extremely slow compared to MPEG-4 encoders.

I've not worked with H.264 myself, so I wouldn't know about it personally. The consensus seems to be that quality is much better at equivalent bitrates (to a point, obviously).

As for redistributing the MPEG-2 files, I have only 32kb/s upstream bandwidth, so at most I could reupload them to one or two people who have fatter pipes. Or, if there is anyone else that already has the files and is willing to distribute them. I'll definitely look at them though, and probably encode it into whatever format ends up being the best (hell, I might even start using H.264 just for this).

There are two ways for MPEG-2 to support telecined video - as progressive video, with the proper flags on each frame to handle the pulldown, or as interlaced video that was telecined in the video domain and then captured as pure interlaced. The first method should be easier to reverse than the second, although it should be possible with both (even with hard telecined video, the 3:2 pulldown means that there are always a top and bottom field that correspond to each film frame, even if they somehow end up spread across frames).

I doubt this was done, but if there was any time compression applied to this video, then it would be impossible to recreate the original film frames, as the pulldown cadence would be broken. As I said, I don't think this would be the case, though, since there's no need to eke a few more frames out of it.

since no UK PS2 owners here seem to be giving it a shot, why not ask over at exploistation.com and see if anyone over there has tried the game yet?

My PAL (Australian) PS2 does the same. By swapping some files and reburning the game I was able to use the Japanese menus and manuals. There is a dir here of my random Sonic Gems shots, the modified version of the game ones starting at 33.

If all he did was swap over some files, it will load the menu textures in Japanese but the game will be still set to the US menu layouts meaning it will just spit out the usual 2 game solts aposed to the 5 in the Japanese side of the game. I think anyway...
