Yeah... This is all at SWS2B... but now that the culT is alive, maybe people have time to care about sonic games. I'll also make some sort of fat text file with all this stuff eventually. Now try not to reply to this topic with a one liner about the 32X or Chaotix sucking. Yes, we've all heard it before.

A problem with Chaotix stuff is that a lot of people know things about it, but they don't tell anyone, so a lot of the stuff I thought I discovered was already known to a select few. I suppose it won't count as new unless... no one knows it?

A loooooooong while back, Ice Guy and I were talking about potentially hacking Knuckles Chaotix. He makes a great program called the GBA color picker, used to convert RGB colors to GBA colors. He said that he was convinced that the 32X used the same colors as the GBA, but had we had no definite backing. Kojichan (whatever happened to her?) wrote a thing on 32X color, so I dug through that and noticed that the 32X doesn't swap bytes when storing data.
So I VDPed on debuGens, and grabbed Mighty's pallete (gotta start with Mighty, of course). Converted the colors in GBA format with a program I made, but didn't byteswap. I searched the chaotix rom, and yea, right at $22921A was Mighty's pallete in GBA.. er.. 32X color format.

So yes, you can use GBA color making/converting/picking tools for 32X color. Same formula. It's just that the bytes aren't swapped in the ROM.

Want to make Mighty blue? Or Vector pink? That's pointless and easy. Just go get Ice Guy's GBA color picker (really nifty program!). Or if your so sadistic that you'd rather type in RGB values, then the "program" I made in flash is decent. Plus mine works on mac or linux or anything with the flash player installed =P. You can play with it here.

Don't trust programs? here's a RGB to GBA (or 32X) color converting formula:
CODE

Take a RGB color. It's got three values, r, g, and b.

[(r + 1) / 8.25] rounded to the nearest integer = R.
Do the same for 'g' and 'b'. you'll have three new variables! R, G, and B.

R       = x
G * 2 = y
B * 4 = z

x        = X
y * 16 = Y
z * 256= Z

Z + Y + Z = N

convert N to HEX.

If your result does not have four digits (ex. 1F, 893, A, 0), tack 0s on to the beggining. (ex. 001F, 0893, 000A, 0000).

There you have your gba/32x color.

But in a GBA ROM, the bytes appear reversed (530E looks like 0E53 in the ROM) becasue GBA is just cool like that.

The 32X isn't cool enough for Little Endian.

Where are these palletes? at $22921A in your NTSC Chaotix ROM. There a whole bunch of em, in the order they are in on the level select menu. You know, the one you have to cheat to get to. The thing is, then there are pointers to palletes I've never seen before, one of them is blue. dun-dun-duuuuun.

Yeah... Sonic Tweaker can do Chaotix palletes.

All the Background art tiles (the tiny ones) in Knuckles Chaotix is in the Nemisis format. There's also stuff that moves (like a fan I found) but it's never anything to interact with. Sic nemsrch.exe (from that mdprog thing) on your ROM. I got like, 92 results, which I have barely begun to look through. Some of the stuff is recognizable. A lot is just tiles that could be from anywhere. Then there are things like these:

One cool thing I found was the text used on menu screens. What's cool about it? I noticed that it's the exact same text used in Sonic Crackers. Same font and all. People at SWS2B claim it's stock text.

I'm fairly sure that this is new:
Pointers in Knuckles Chaotix:

1) Get real address (ex. 22921A, mighty's pallete).

2) Add 00700000. (7 with five zeroes after it)

3) search for pointer (take result from step 2 and put two zeroes before it. 0092921A).

4) Party time!

Nice. This further proves the theory that Chaotix was based off Crackers and Mighty based off Sonic. (Although it isnt really a theory, its pretty obvious.)

Lemme explain what this is:
1st row:
Sonic's drunken animation from Crackers, which matches perfectly with my discovery, row 2.

2nd row:
Mighty's drunken animation! Mwahahah! (hint to staff: put it on this page)

The 4 sprites just below and left of row 2:
Same story as rows 1 and 2. Mwahahah!

Knux thing to the right:
That was a bad rip, but I don't believe it's used in the game.

Knux drunk sprite:
You've seen it before, but it's always been recolored from the wechia, so the pallete on the arm an ring have always been wrong. This is right.

Four Knux in bottom right:
Yeah. They're used in the game. But they're exactly the same as their s3&k counterparts. More similar than Mighty and Sonic.

Espio heads:
In espio's idle animation, his head is part of the sprite right? So then why the floating head sprites?

Disturbing Vector things:
I dunno. You tell me. but I can see why these would get cut from the final.

Awesome find. It's been a long time since I submitted those recolored Wechnia sprites to the Cult, and I figured everybody dropped the idea of finding new stuff in Chaotix. I'm really looking forward to seeing what else you find in the game. Maybe you could dig up the mysterious 3D-ish Carnival Island pic/map thing. Boy wouldn't that make my day.

I've seen a bit more but god is it unpleasant ripping sprites with Gens. Then again, I'm just used to VBA. DebuGens is all "i can toggle layers!", then it can't.
I've seen a couple more unused sprites (mighty throwing), I'll get around to those eventually.
Are you the same DirtyDan that makes the Project: Chaotix sprite sheet? If so, good job!

thost vector sprites look to me as a forward facing jumping sprite. but its odd if he as a ring as they made him in the final why is those sprites leaning towards a spherical jump like the older sonic chars.

Possibly, but I'd say the ring jump would be an improvement over the sqhere jump for Vector.
