Play conducted an interview with the director of Riders, Takashi Yuda. I didn't buy the book just for the interview, on account of Play being a poor publication that's ridiculously optimistic about almost every game that comes their way. However, I did take notes of the critical info, most of which reveals a lot about the game's secrets and story. The highlights:
  • This is not a follow-up to Sonic R in any way(god bless for that). The emphasis on the letter R is there because, apparently, it's cool to promote racing games that way across the pacific.
  • When you hit 180 KPH, you'll form a slipstream behind you. If another competitor comes to you looking for a free boost, they can draft you in that slipstream to pick up speed. But if you hang around behind someone too long, your own turbulence may screw it up. (As we already know, players who are being drafted have the ability to shake off the unwelcome pest behind them.)
  • You probably know this too, but the gauge above your speedometer is your air gauge, AKA your fuel. You can use up some of that fuel for a speed boost and such things. It's replenished by doing tricks, drafting, and pulling into designated pit stop areas on the track(although you probably won't come to a stop while doing it). What you don't know is that if you run out of gas, you're forced to hoof it until you can refuel, and that won't help your chances of a good finish.
  • The boards were based on - what else - the hoverboards from Back to the Future Part II. Speaking of boards, there's 40 in all, and many of them need to be unlocked. So it's sort of like the driver/kart mechanics from Mario Kart Double Dash, mixing character strengths with vehicle strengths.
  • He didn't quite confirm it the way he said it, but he sorta hinted that Shadow and Metal Sonic are unlockable characters. If that's true, then they're among the other 8 characters that need to be unlocked. Standard cast of 7 included, there are 17 racers in all.
  • He wasn't quite as forthcoming about the number of tracks, but he described it as "lots". I'll be happy if there are at least 20.
  • They've chosen to put some effort into the storyline(barf). The hoverboard race Eggman is hosting is actually a front for something involving the Chaos Emeralds. Team Babylon (the three birds), as previously reported, are thieves working for the doctor, but they apparently have their own agenda. See also: Sonic Adventure series ¬_¬
  • The story mode works like it did in Sonic Battle: you play Sonic's episode first, then Tails, ect. Everyone has their own side of the story.
  • Yuda stated that the trick system was unique and set Riders apart from other racing games. O RLY?

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully it'll be a fun game. I like the whole air thing... and that old trailer pretty much ramped up my interest for this title. Looking foward to Sonic Rush the most though, but this looks pretty good too.

slick racers are what I do best... Sonic is just an added bonus... I simply hope they don't rely too much on the "story" bullshit. I don't give a fuck, I just want a GOOD game that's fun to play. As it stands, Riders is looking to promise that...

...and was I the only person who actually liked R a LOT? I've got fond memories of it on my Saturn, I just wish there had been MORE to it... it was an awesome idea in theory (one of which I had back in the Genesis days ever since I laid my hands on my friend's SNES controller with Mario Kart), but there was no substance.

R was freaking awesome, in my opinion, having finally gotten to play in on Sonic Gems Collection. It only had two strikes against it: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short, and the characters sucked at turning around if they ran into walls. Other than that, it's a hell of a fun game. And while Riders appeared to be the epitome of cheesy during its first showing, now it's looking to be an incredibly fun racing/party game.

The turning around thing was because they based the game on a "car" racing engine, but forgot to add a "reverse" function... because people don't naturally run backwards XP The engine they made was also one of the reasons so many people bitched about the controls, critisizing the "free-roaming" claims... but seriously, how the fuck are you going to have a RACING game where all you do is hold forward on the d-pad/control stick? Idiots.

Agreed. I think the best way to get out of corners was jump-turning. But I could be wrong.

Incidentally, the hold-forward thing was later instated into Sonic Adventure. <,<;;

It doesn't seem all that appealing really, okay I can kinda get a little curious how it will be considering SEGA made F-Zero GX. But, yeah, it's just a spinoff game. And air-boards isn't exactly a new idea, just look at...uh, Airborders, and tricksystem? Please, it's just a case of hypeophilia(lol)... I mean c'mon, what could they possible bring that is 'unique'...instead of using the buttons you do tricks with your imagination and courage?
I might seem bashing for a game that I haven't even played... yeah, I am, deal with it.

Yeah, it's not the most creative thing in the world. Hell, it looked horrible from the news report alone. I mean: new characters? Gimmicky eXtreme advertisement? Bad taste of Sonic R for many people? It was doomed to failure.

But once I watched the videos, I was floored. The speed and track design is reminiscent of F-Zero with its twists, turns, and mind-numbing heights. Sonic characters are always a plus. The fuel usage and slipstreams seem to imply some very fun gameplay mechanics, especially in multiplayer. I can just imagine a bunch of pros weaving in and out of first while riding each other's slipstreams. Tricks actually serve a purpose in this racing game, which, while not unheard of, is usually relegated to being a "cool option."

All in all, it looks like it'll be something many games aren't nowadays: fun.

Hell yes <3

Riders looks like a good combination of those games, especially F-Zero, so I think it will play well. It looks great, but i'm more interested in Rush at the moment. But so far, it seems promising.

I'd like another F-Zero on GameCube before the next generation of consoles becomes the norm ¬.¬

Indeed, at this point it seems a DS game or something would be more likely. And the GC seems to be phasing out slowly, but still, the Revolution's backwards compatibility makes it OK if they wanted to go ahead and make another Gamecube game. But there hasn't been a peep about new F-Zero games, so it makes me a bit sad. I would definitely love a DS title though, with the online features that Mario Kart DS is getting.
