Hello friends !

Today I added Game Maker support to the KENS library, so Game Maker users will be able to make Sonic Hacking tools using Game Maker !

KENS 1.2 is ready for download. Additionally, TSDC has been repacked to include the latest KENS DLLs.

It doesn't work for Game Maker. Maybe it's the problem you said it might be before?

I've got a bug to report. The saxman decompressor only works on about half the songs. On the other half, the thing goes into an infinate loop. Specifically, the credits music (number 0x1E, at 0xFD797) does this, but there are quite a few others.

Also, if you could add some kind of feedback to tsdc, it would be greatly appreciated. All I want to know is where the credits music ends in the rom, but writing my own decompressor just to find that out seems a little extreme. Oh, on that note, do you have some docs on the saxman compression format? I assume there were probably some on shacnet, but that kinda doesn't help now.

Yeah, and one more small thing. The last two entries on the list of saxman compressed archives are bogus. Those locations are somewhere in the middle of a few sound effects. Also, the missing song, Continue(1C), is located at 0xF0002. Just thought you might want to update the list.

Thanks for reporting that bug on the Saxman decompressor.

As for your request, the fact that the algorithm is in a DLL makes it a bit harder. All I can do is making the functions inside the DLL to return the number of bytes read (for decompression) or written (for compression). Then, TSDC would retrieve that value and show it to you. What do you think about that ?

Concerning the doc about the Saxman compression format, I'll upload it somewhere very soon. Though, there are a lot of things that I did not find in that doc. I don't think I wrote them anywhere, I just made the decompression algorithm from what I was learning. The decompression algorithm is quite easy, it could also be a good source of info to you.

Well, what I found is quite annoying for me. It seems that songs 18, 1B, 1D and 1E actually use a variation of the format (or perhaps a very different format). The first little endian word of a compressed archive should indicate the size of the archive (compressed), though, for these 4, it does not indicate the size, or at least, does not indicate it directly (these numbers are much bigger, this explains why the decompressor entered an infinite loop). Sadly for you, the credits music uses that variation of the format. Oddly enough, that format is used for 3 small musics (1-Up, Game Over, Got An Emerald...), so I wonder why it is used by the credits musics. I suspect it is able to use data from other archives (as the credits musics repeats some parts of previous musics), but this is only a supposition. More info soon, I hope...

Another update to KENS. This version (V1.3) supports the compression and decompression of the Sonic 2 Sound Driver (using a very slight variation of the Saxman format). I also corrected a bug that prevented to decompress from Game Maker (though, you were still able to compress :D).

TSDC was also updated, and supports the new Saxman functions (this means you are able to compress and decompress the Sonic 2 Sound Driver with it). This is quite special though, as you have to enter the size of the archive by yourself. That shouldn't be a problem anyway, as I wrote it in the location list, at the end of the Sonic 2 Sound Driver location.

Enjoy.

Hello ladies and gentlemen !

Guess what ? KENS was updated again ! Well, I should have updated this a while ago, but holidays are huh... Not for work. :D

So, this new version fixes a bug in the enigma algorithm and a speed issue in the Kossinski algorithm (this speed issue occurs in a special case). See the first post for details.

For the record, the credits music is uncompressed. That's why it won't decompress properly. :P
