Bah. If this shit is finally installed on PS3 games, it will be more fun for PS2 hackers/crackers.

I think it would be great if the PS3 had that. That would mean the end of Sony in the gaming industry.

I again agree that I prefer Microsoft dominance to Sony dominance in the games market, as long as MS doesn't start up the DRM bullshit too.

Obviously I'd rather just have Sega dominance....

QUOTE(NiktheGreek @ Nov 10 2005, 02:54 PM) *
Anyway, I don't know why you should be rejoicing about the prospect of Sony leaving the market - all signs then point to Microsoft dominance, which is no better or worse than Sony control.

I really think Microsoft could do a better job than Sony. For a start, they've been making games for quite some time, and most of them are pretty good. Second, since the company generally has a bad reputation because of Windows (not that most people who hate Microsoft have a reason to do so), they have to deliver a better product because brand recognition just won't work with them. Sony however, has always been highly regarded by the general public, and their brand has been consistently powerful; they will get a big chunk of market share purely because their machine is a Sony machine.

Sony's ease in taking the market wasn't necessarily because of the name, more a combination of relevant software, a great marketing drive and ridiculously incompetent competitors. Microsoft's relative difficulty in getting a foot in the market has been due to poor software support for Japan, initial high price worries, established strong competition and the brand name.

However, make no mistake about the potential situation. Microsoft taking control of market direction could very well further marginalise Japanese developers, which would stifle innovation and damage the ability to export work that doesn't fit with popular Western tastes (in particular, Nintendo would have lots of problems with this). In addition, the company is well-known for it's occasionally dodgy business practices.

QUOTE(ωιτεο&# @ Nov 10 2005, 01:27 PM) *

Somehow I get a kick out of them being at each other's throats in video games, yet as we speak I (and many of you, for that matter) am typing from a Sony-made computer running Windows XP.

Also:
QUOTE
At the very least, this time around Sony could fall back on the PSP.

Looking at the upcoming DS lineup, that "last hope" doesn't look like it's going to be standing long

Quality software has never, ever meant anything in the grand scheme of things. If it did, we'd all be looking forward to the next Sega console thanks to the Dreamcast's fantastic turnaround of company fortunes.

Besides, I'm not calling the PSP a "last hope" by any means - it certainly isn't any more of one than the DS is for Nintendo. Already they've shipped out 10 million of the buggers, and with the mainstream media on Sony's side you can bet they'll sell like wildfire over Christmas. It'll be interesting to watch, but this race is still wide open and I wouldn't write either system off yet. I don't find myself particularly comfortable defending Sony's market position, but I like to remain realistic about these things. Never underestimate the power of media-controlled zombies with money.

But seriously, this isn't even a tough thing to do - just encrypt the entire disc

Which would actually make it illegal to backup under the DMCA, unlike the bullshit that Nintendo spew out. Two birds with one stone.

Not that it'd really affect anything, but it's practically the same as CSS.

Both Sony and Microsoft are proven to use disgusting tactics to achieve market dominance, difference is that as far as I can tell, Microsoft actually can make leet quality shit when it is pushed by the competition while Sony just lives up to its hype.

This'll just make a fertile ground for "piracy". If they want a war, that's what they're gonna get.

I'm gonna pull a typical BMP move here and note that according to a recent post on slashdot, these CD's have some some DRM lovelyness...for Mac. It doesn't autorun (you have to run start.app) and the program asks your username and password (and that obviously means 'I am screwing around with your system folder"), but its there. I guess we all can feel the love. They're not rootkit superh4x0r sort of things, but they are kernel extensions, which Apple has been big on saying 'PLEASE dont do those.'

For what it's worth, it's still worth noting that PSP is still having stock issues in this country - units are literally selling out as fast as they're getting shipped in. Go look on Amazon.co.uk, waiting period is between 4-6 weeks at the moment.

And at the launch, the PSP squished the DS's launch flat - more than twice the number of units sold.

Regarding these disks, for what it's worth I agree with Nik - these won't be used in the PS3 for consumer sold games, it'd be suicide. This patent could literally be for anything, even just as insurance. Microsoft as one random example has hundreds of patents it's sitting on just in case they're ever needed.

Yes, I'm about to be savagely attacked for daring to suggest something other than Nintendo ruling all, but SOMEONE has to provide a bit of balance =P

Well if Sony had at least used that almost 1 year gap from Japanese release to European release to make the damn units there wouldn't be a god damn problem, but since they pussy-footed around the whole mess it's totaled to what you said.

With this new information which may concern the PS3, I am now starting to doubt getting one... I was going to get one... Mainly for MGS4... but if they're going to pull this use-only-once disc shit, I don't want to even go near a PS3... The PS2 was an easy enough to break piece of shit as it was anyway... I'm sorry, it's the old granny of consoles when it comes to durability...
Nintendo lost me when they showed us the remote controler... But X-Box 360 turns me off because of the titles on it... =/
