I don't know when you grew up, but ALL the cartoons I had were absolute shit like James Bond Jr. Transformers G1 had just ended it's run, granted I now realize that seasons 3 and 4 pretty much sucked ass (the movie ruled though.) Anyway, I do think that the Japanese do a better job, although that's sorta like saying "This is the best place I'd like to be shot." Still, I watch very little anime, but most of the few shows that are actually good (um, 5?) just happen to be anime. Of course, America's got Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

EDIT: Rephrased.

Well, one thing we thankfully didn't inherit from the eighties-nineties was 30-minute long toy advertisements. You want a game show that isn't retarded? Takeshi's Castle. That's how I get my pathetic little chuckles. =D

And anyway, I have no strong feelings for or against anime, as for the most part it's aimed at an alien culture. Unless, of course, it's anime produced especially for a Western market - and even then, purists and otaku fags alike will claim it's not true anime.

Although I guess I can't talk, I don't really watch the idiot box much, save from occasionally checking on the news and watching Spongebob with my younger siblings.

Yeah... american cartoons are sorta... 'bleh' right now. Hell, even with anime fansubs, I'm only watching 1 or 2 titles at a time since everything else seems like it's been done before. I don't watch anime on TV these days, just waiting for Season 2 of Stand Alone Complex to air on Adult Swim.

Anyways, as for American cartoons I've been watching... I think Camp Lazlo is okay, and it's by the good folks who gave us Rocko's Modern Life. Not really the same kind of humour... but I think it's still better than much else that's on air. Other than that, I have a riot with Billy & Mandy, and Foster's Home.

Not really anything I watch on Nick. Fairly Odd Parents sometimes. I wanted to like Danny Phantom, but that just got boring as hell. I think Avatar is rad too, but too many people get turned off by that 'lolz anime' look. Hell, it looks better than most low budget anime. I think it's got nice story telling too, and it doesn't use anime gags like Teen Titans does constantly. And the animators actually studied with martial artists, so in fights the movements and stances look very realistic.

But yeah, there are a ton of programs on TV that just aren't worthwhile these days. But eh, what can you do. At the same time though, I'm older have better things to do than be glued to a TV 24/7 like I was when I was a kid, hehe.

actually, there are a lot of people, of my generation (idk about y'alls) who are working on trying to revive the "animation renaissance" of the early nineties.

The problem I see with this new cartoon audience, merely speculation, is that they're trying to grow up too fast. The execs up in Fat Pig Hall are going to utilize this to obviously make money off of it.

In Japan, their storytelling in animation is more of esoteric expression than simple... comedic chaos that we know and love. Unfortunately, the mindset of japanese childhood culture and that of us or both similar but on 2 extreme sides of the spectrum. The big wigs know this, and market anime as a "cartoon so you can be all adult-like and cool" and just profit of the ignorance.

To be honest, I'd rather see a cross dressing rabbit outwit a honkey than have a bunch of teenagers in goofy costumes talk about extensialism.

EDIT: *looks at sig* Oh sweet son of a bitch

Yep, I saw it and some other old cartoons a few times at my cousin's place. I don't have digital cable or sattelite though, so I can't watch those extra channels at home. And nice reply Wize. Lol @ your edit. I was kinda thinking that in the back of my head. XD

More points.

This "quick adulthood-creativity stangnance" is also prevalent in the slew of Harry Potter/anything fanfics. I remember when I had to pull all sorts of ideas out of my own skull to make shit work, rather than take an existing idea and add proverbial salt to it. The younger generation of creative-ites also have this bizzare notion of "sex sells" probably from watching too much tv while their parents go out to their yuppie restaurants talk about how they can't control their kids. So these 11 year olds have these "x has sex with y in the magic chamber" and it... it desaturates the wave of creative flow people work their ass to obtain.

2. But with that said, dont forget where you are timewise. Just because TV is dead doesn't mean media is. Fuckin get your ass up, start thinking creatively and put your talents on the web. The internet, with its kiddie animal porn and websites of how Jesus and the Illuminati fought aliens during WWII, can be a foundation of a revolution of american animation. We just need to utilize its power, and stop the bitching.

<3 I can totally see more independant creations being made and shared on the internet. Hell, it's already happening now, but in time I'm sure it'll be something that's going to be seen more often. I myself have been scheming this silly story with an old school friend of mine, but these days I keep thinking of how the concept would work as a game...

Must draw out more plans ~_~

But yeah peeps. If you wanna see some change, gotta do it yourself. Whip out a camcorder, pull out your mic, pencils, paper, flash, notepad, whatever. Just get your stuff out there.

Lawl. My initial plan was to have this like a campy cheesy power ranger thing... but it kinda.. evolved, so to speak. I don't know, it is hard to pull what the japanese do. Lot's of lil kids emulate it, but dont understand the reasoning behind it. And there have been some kickass american cartoons that pulled it off (Gargoyles, Spawn, Fosters Home For...) so maybe i can pull it off too. idk.

The Slapstick irreverent cartoons have just grown up with the audience. When we were kids, we had like, Tiny toons, Ren and Stimpy, and Freakazoid. Now it's just Family Guy, Robot Chicken and the like. So yeah, the "good ol' days" are still there if you know where to look.

Another option I find useful is to download shows from the past that you missed on TV, were ignored and lost support, or whatnot. Here's some gems I have on discs, all quality entertainment.

Jack Of All Trades
Brisco County Jr.
Good VS Evil aka G VS E
Lexx
Sifl & Olly
MST3K

oh, this might help http://www.myspleen.net/index.php

Inspector Gadget was animated by a japanese company.
(So were the very first Transformers cartoons, and the whole movie too)

with that said, Freakazoid and the REal adventures of Johnny Quest were probably the last good cartoons which werent japanese.

Seinfeld is the best. I still watch the re-runs of it all the time and I bought the latest season of it on dvd. It's to bad Jerry's retired now...

Most of the new cartoons are stupid. I like Fosters home for Imaginary frieds a little bit and Camp Lazlos ok but most of it sucks. Most Cartoon Network shows are gay now and it doesen't look like it will change. As for nick I watch the older shows like Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's modern life. Nicktoons Tv airs Spongebob all the time now which is weird because the shows not that old. I miss all the old cartoons.

In the sitcom standards there are not that many good one's now. Friends is all over, Drew Carey's done, most sitcoms now are just new and stupid. The best will always be seinfeld though.

The last cartoon I held much of any interest in was Jonny Bravo. The early episodes, where Jonny was not a total babbling retard, were great. Then the show just kind of deteriorated(along with all the other shows that used to be good on Cartoon Network)...as Jonny got stupider, I guess it just stopped being funny.

But i've pretty much blown off cartoons now, and save for an occasional shot of classic Looney Tunes, I mostly ignore the whole genre. So i'm not gonna complain.

The reason for todays TV entertainment is pretty much because TV ceo's and producers got no balls and are greedy. They have a orginal idea in one hand and a used (successful) idea in the other which cost a fraction of the other show, he od course chooses the latter.
And anime ain't so bad, it's just finding something good... which is impossible because networks refuses to show unknown shows. I though enjoyed Hellsing and Trigun alot... and Excel Saga for that matter.
But anyway your right Hez, they don't make animation as they use to, I could kill for another Looney Toon or Animaniacs.
I think it was best said in this Toonzone article.
And I think people are to hard on Transformers really... you can't make another Optimus Prime these days.
