I know this kind of thing is all too common, with even a box going for money recently, but that at least looked like the item. This is pure hilarity, though. 22 bids, $335 (above retail price!) for the information contained on the auction. It's stated in capital letters that the Xbox 360 is not actually for sale.

Sometimes I wonder how these people even connect to the internet.

Anyway, I don't know why you should be rejoicing about the prospect of Sony leaving the market - all signs then point to Microsoft dominance, which is no better or worse than Sony control.

I really think Microsoft could do a better job than Sony. For a start, they've been making games for quite some time, and most of them are pretty good. Second, since the company generally has a bad reputation because of Windows (not that most people who hate Microsoft have a reason to do so), they have to deliver a better product because brand recognition just won't work with them. Sony however, has always been highly regarded by the general public, and their brand has been consistently powerful; they will get a big chunk of market share purely because their machine is a Sony machine.

Sony's ease in taking the market wasn't necessarily because of the name, more a combination of relevant software, a great marketing drive and ridiculously incompetent competitors. Microsoft's relative difficulty in getting a foot in the market has been due to poor software support for Japan, initial high price worries, established strong competition and the brand name.

However, make no mistake about the potential situation. Microsoft taking control of market direction could very well further marginalise Japanese developers, which would stifle innovation and damage the ability to export work that doesn't fit with popular Western tastes (in particular, Nintendo would have lots of problems with this). In addition, the company is well-known for it's occasionally dodgy business practices.

QUOTE(ωιτεο&# @ Nov 10 2005, 01:27 PM) *

Somehow I get a kick out of them being at each other's throats in video games, yet as we speak I (and many of you, for that matter) am typing from a Sony-made computer running Windows XP.

At the very least, this time around Sony could fall back on the PSP.

Looking at the upcoming DS lineup, that "last hope" doesn't look like it's going to be standing long

Quality software has never, ever meant anything in the grand scheme of things. If it did, we'd all be looking forward to the next Sega console thanks to the Dreamcast's fantastic turnaround of company fortunes.

Besides, I'm not calling the PSP a "last hope" by any means - it certainly isn't any more of one than the DS is for Nintendo. Already they've shipped out 10 million of the buggers, and with the mainstream media on Sony's side you can bet they'll sell like wildfire over Christmas. It'll be interesting to watch, but this race is still wide open and I wouldn't write either system off yet. I don't find myself particularly comfortable defending Sony's market position, but I like to remain realistic about these things. Never underestimate the power of media-controlled zombies with money.

End? Failing once didn't stop Atari, it didn't stop Sega and it hasn't stopped Nintendo. At the very least, Sony could fall back on the PSP.

The difference is that by the time Sony loses it in terms of offering a decent gaming platform, it will have lost all dominance in the AV market, thanks to companies like Samsung and Apple. Sony would only have Columbia Tristar and Sony Music to rely on; hence, it would be an absolute nobody in the hardware market, and this happens because other people can offer the same product cheaper and with less restrictions. Name a single market where Sony is king? Yeah, videogames. And the PSP's a wake-up call; you either compete with a decent product or you'll come second, since brand recognition won't last forever.

In this instance, you're simply pointing out other reasons why Sony will continue to pour money into it's gaming wing. Microsoft subsidises it's money-losing games division with it's other departments, and Sony can do the same. They'll pour money into the gaming division in an attempt to stay on top of it (whether this works is up to the public, of course). Even if the next generation of consoles ends with Playstation 3 in second or third place, Sony will keep going because they feel it's their best hope. The best thing they could do is to actually get out of non-gaming hardware in order to cut R&D costs. As for the PSP, as far as I can tell the system is holding it's own against the DS. First place is still far from being decided.

Anyway, I don't know why you should be rejoicing about the prospect of Sony leaving the market - all signs then point to Microsoft dominance, which is no better or worse than Sony control.

DISCLAIMER: This hasn't been announced for actual use in the PS3 yet. I'm not jumping to any conclusions. Therefore, everything I say from here on is purely speculative.

The move against used games would make sense, from a corporate financial standpoint. Sony makes it's money on the sale of new games only. Piracy is only a minor issue and the people who practice it obviously aren't prepared to spend any money at all, and aren't adverse to doing things that invalidate their warranties to avoid spending money. By comparison, the sale of used games is legal, profitable for all involved parties (ironically, it's retail - the least deserving) and attractive to consumers in terms of price and ease. The moneymen of the industry hate used games, because it means they're being undercut and taken out of the equation.

Of course, this bones both consumers and retail, and it's for this reason that I can't see Sony applying it to regular retail PS3 games. If the consumer can't get cheap games, they may well just stop buying games or only buy for other consoles, leading to a downturn in PS3 business. Retailers would also be considerably pissed off that the lucrative after-market they've created would be shattered, and would likely retaliate by getting behind the Xbox 360 more.

It actually makes far more sense as a way to control rental profits from officially approved Sony outlets. If there's a portion of the disc that can be written over to kill the security code, surely it would be possible to write new codes over for rental purposes? It could be a way of shifting the focus from selling the game to rental places at a standard price. A new scheme could be implemented in which companies only pay for the writing equipment, with games being delivered for free but a fee charged for each new security code. This would ensure that not only does Sony get a portion of the money from every single rental, but rental outlets would be less risk-averse when it comes to getting obscure or poorly-marketed software in.

My guess is that it's not even going to be implemented in the PS3 at all, to be honest.

He doesn't make the spinoffs any more, though. Same goes for Nintendo. Plus, the quality could be called into question for a fair number of these.

Alphadream Corporation
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga GBA
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time DS

Camelot
Mario Tennis GC
Mario Tennis GBA
Mario Golf GC
Mario Golf GBA

EA
NBA Street GC
SSX On Tour GC
(Both feature Mario as a playable character in order to attract sales)

Fuse Games
Mario Pinball GBA

Hudson
Mario Party (series)

Konami
Mario DDR GC

Namco
Mario Baseball GC

Next Level Games
Mario Strikers GC

Square Enix
Mario Basket DS

I like to look at it this way: the most recent issue of GamesTM had a little gold card inserted, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. It was advertising no less than five games (one of which was a re-release), all due for release between the last week in October and the end of the year. I'm surprised Mario's udders haven't fallen off.

Everyone had to re-register in August 2003 due to a forum wipe.

"So like, the Dreamcast had a great library and all, but the sequel to Halo 2 (which was widely considered an overhyped letdown) will pwn it all on it's own!"

I don't buy that for a second. That sells short the rest of the X360 library, and games like DOA4 don't deserve that kind of treatment.

Also, apparently Sony might not be providing a cohesive online service for the PS3. Instead, each game/game company will probably have their own service/subscription fees/logins/etc.

The Dreamcast online services weren't cohesive either. Servers were spread across different companies and protocols in every territory. It didn't work out too badly whilst fully supported, but it can make for problems in the long term - for example, the Dreamarena authentification used in Quake 3 (PAL) means players can no longer get online, whereas US players still can. A unified service is far better.

...I was actually under the impression I was going to be ignored and the discussion would progress normally (as I really hope it does, actually), and I thought my lack of punctuation would further drive home the point that I was full of it. But wow. Dude, you just came out of nowhere. What WAS that? 117 words in reply to four? Jeez.

And now there's gonna be a big discussion in this topic about this, which...can we not? I don't wanna screw up this topic. I really don't. It was just one lame thing, in the hopes of getting a slight snicker. But NOW we gotta have a argument. So if we're gonna do that, can we NOT do it here?

I haven't read either comic anyway.

Okay, don't want to shit up the topic too much either (for pretty obvious reasons).

I wouldn't have minded the post had it seemed to have been ignored, but at the point I was posting from (before FlashTHD's post) it looked as if the topic was about to seriously derail into Star Wars off the back of a reply to your post. In fact since your post, there's only been a single reply* on the subject of Archie vs Fleetway.

I'm not trying to be confrontational for the sake of it or score points off you, because I've never had any issues with you and don't intend to start one. Basically, my only goal was to try to keep what I believe to be a potentially interesting discussion on track, and I seem to have come across as being overly aggressive in doing so despite my best efforts to remain polite.

Basically, I'll offer up an apology for being rude and a quick end to this dispute. Deal?

*EDIT: Two replies, another added while I was posting. =)
